Instrumental at Inkwell

Monthly acoustic nights

Instrumental is Inkwell’s monthly acoustic night. It runs the first Friday of every month and is presented by Cloth Cat and Arts & Minds. A diverse range of local acts play at every gig and audiences can enjoy the finest real ale from award winning Ridgeside Brewery alongside the music. We also raise money for arts and mental health projects at the same time!

For more information about each months gig and who’s on the line up, keep an eye on our blog where we will provide background information on the artists performing, soundclips and past recordings for you to enjoy.

The Acts

A huge range of Leeds-based acts play at Instrumental: from singer songwriters to well established bands. Some recent highlights include The Roman Empire, Steph Stephenson, Miranda Arieh, Dylan Brierley, Georgette Hilton and Eclectic Sparks. At every gig we try to feature performers who have had personal experience of mental health issues. We are always looking for acts! If you want to perform please email [email protected]

Our Venue

Inkwell is a beautiful arts centre converted from the Old Shoulder of Mutton Pub in LS7. The main gallery space is converted into an evening venue with fairy lights, fully functioning bar and ample seating. Audiences can enjoy music close up or from the comfort of the lovely large patio. The bar is stocked with local real ale and other tasty treats and bar snacks.

Where the money goes

All the money from the door goes to paying for art workshops at in-patient mental health hospitals in Leeds, reaching people in serious need of a dose of creativity. A series of music workshops recently occurred at the Newsam Centre in Seacroft. Money made on the bar helps Inkwell keep going as an arts venue, providing art classes and other creative activities and a safe welcoming space for people experiencing mental health difficulties to flourish.

Brief History

Instrumental is a collaboration between Arts & Minds and Cloth Cat. It started in 2011 when Dave Lynch had an idea for ‘one big gig’. Since then, Instrumental have put on gigs at the Swarthmore Centre, at Leeds University and at Oxjam, busked in Trinity Shopping Centre, run song writing workshops and hosted a mini music festival! The partnership with Inkwell has run for 2 years.
